چکیده

Abstract In this paper, a framework for the simulation of crack propagation in brittle and ductile materials is proposed. The derived by extending eigenerosion approach Pandolfi Ortiz (Int J Numer Methods Eng 92(8):694–714, 2012. 10.1002/nme.4352 ) to finite strains connecting it with generalized energy-based, Griffith-type failure criterion fracture. To model elasto-plastic response, classical strain formulation extended viscous regularization account shear band localization prior compression–tension asymmetry, which becomes particularly important during under cyclic loading, incorporated splitting energy density into tensile compression part. comparative study based on benchmark problems, shown that unified indeed able represent fracture at ensure converging, mesh-independent solutions. Furthermore, proposed analyzed Wöhler curves can be represented.

Crack propagation due to brittle and ductile failures in microporous thermoelastoviscoplastic functionally graded materials

Plane strain transient finite thermomechanical deformations of heat-conducting functionally gradient materials comprised of tungsten and nickel–iron matrix are analyzed to delineate brittle/ductile failures by the nodal release technique. Each material is modeled as strain-hardening, strain-rate-hardening and thermally-softening. Effective properties are derived by the rule of mixtures. At nomi...

Mechanisms of fatigue-crack propagation in ductile and brittle solids

The mechanisms of fatigue-crack propagation are examined with particular emphasis on the similarities and differences between cyclic crack growth in ductile materials, such as metals, and corresponding behavior in brittle materials, such as intermetallics and ceramics. This is achieved by considering the process of fatiguecrack growth as a mutual competition between intrinsic mechanisms of crac...

Simulation of Crack Growth in Ductile Materials

During crack growth of real materials, the total energy released can be partitioned into elastic and dissipative terms. By analyzing material models with mechanisms for dissipating energy and tracking all energy terms during crack growth, it is proposed that computer simulations of fracture can model crack growth by a total energy balance condition. One approach for developing fracture simulati...

Fatigue-Crack Propagation Behavior of Ductile/Brittle Laminated Composites

A study has been made of the fatigue-crack propagation properties of a series of laminated Nbreinforced Nb3Al intermetallic-matrix composites with varying microstructural scale but nominally identical reinforcement volume fraction (20 pct Nb). It was found that resistance to fatigue-crack growth improved with increasing metallic layer thickness (in the range 50 to 250 mm) both in the crack-divi...

Anisotropic mesh adaptation for quasistatic crack propagation in brittle materials

The numerical simulation of quasistatic fracturing of brittle material, where no predefined crack path is imposed, is a challenging problem. In particular, we deal with the Francfort-Marigo model which requires the minimization of the well-known nonconvex and nonsmooth Mumford-Shah functional. To deal with a smoother problem which eases the minimization process of the energy, we consider the Γ-...
